Representatives of the Canada Border Agency (CBSA), Ontario and Quebec police are scheduled to speak to the media Wednesday in Montreal about “significant steps [made] By intercepting stolen vehicles”.

The purpose of the press conference is for officials to detail “an inter-provincial investigation that has yielded substantial results.”

The operation is a joint effort between the CBSA and various police forces in Quebec and Ontario.

The results come after the federal government pledged $28 million in February to help combat the export of stolen vehicles by giving the CBSA greater ability to identify and search containers that may contain stolen vehicles.

The federal government says about 90,000 cars are stolen in Canada every year.

In 2023, the Montreal Police Department (SPVM) estimates that more than 11,000 vehicles will be reported stolen on its territory, compared to 9,000 in 2022.

The force notes that the number of car thefts has been on a steady rise since 2019.
