  • Reduced prices to make panel installation easy.
  • Prices fell after an adequate supply of equipment.
  • No change in inverter and battery rates.

KARACHI: Amid rising demand due to sky-rocketing power bills, prices of solar panels in Pakistan have come down sharply making it easier for consumers to install the cheaper option.

The reduction in the prices of the panels will also reduce the costs of electricity for consumers drawn through traditional power sources.

According to dealers, the prices have fallen due to an adequate supply of equipment in the local market and a downward trend in international rates, adding that the rates have fallen by 30% in the last six months.

They shared that the price per watt has come down to Rs40 or more in the market and panels of different brands are currently available at Rs37/watt – a huge decline compared to Rs80/watt in 2022.

The dealers said that installing a 5kW solar power system now costs Rs215,000 cheaper while the price of a 5kW system has come down by Rs430,000.

However, there is no change in the rates of inverters and batteries.

This downward trend is expected to continue.

Last month, the Power Division also dismissed rumors claiming that the government is all set to impose a flat tax on solar power.

Reports were circulating on social media platforms that a summary has been moved to introduce the fixed tax on solar electricity.

The reports further said that the CPPA proposal suggests levying a tax of Rs2,000 per kilowatt on those who install solar panels for residential or commercial purposes.

However, Power Division called the rumors “baseless”.

“Neither the Central Power Purchase Agency nor the Power Division has sent any such summary to the government in this regard.”

Suggesting a tariff cut for solar net meters, the Power Division, however, said the current system promotes unhealthy investment in the sector.
