A group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators who have set up camp on the downtown Montreal campus of McGill University say they are better organized and prepared than ever as the protest extends into a second week.
Protester Ari Nahman says the camp has become a “mini city” with dozens of rainproof tents, a library, a pile of donated supplies and temporary wooden sidewalks to keep the mud at bay.
On Sunday, members of the camp could be seen digging a shallow ditch to drain the heavy rain, while others staffed a tent acting as a “free shop” serving hot coffee, food and rain gear.

Pro-Palestinian activists have also set up tents at the University of Toronto, the University of Ottawa and the University of British Columbia campus in Vancouver, following a wave of similar protests on campuses in the United States linked to the Israel-Hamas war.
Opponents of the camps have said the protests are illegal and make some Jewish students feel unsafe, and McGill and Premier François Legault have asked the police to help dismantle the tents in Montreal.
Nahman, a member of Concordia Independent Jewish Voices, says the campers want to leave but won’t until their universities agree to pull money from companies protesters say support Israel’s actions against Palestinians.
