Don’t worry: it’s just a test.

If you live or work in Montreal, you may hear warning signs on Wednesday.

As part of an annual exercise, ten companies will return to sounding their emergency sirens for three minutes each.

The sirens will be activated between 9:00 and 15:00 to simulate an event involving the release of a toxic chemical.

In the event of an actual emergency, the sound is a signal for people to do the following:

  • Quickly enter the nearest building
  • Close doors, windows and ventilation
  • Do not pick up children from school so as not to endanger yourself or your children
  • Avoid blocking phone lines
  • Follow the instructions of the authorities

According to a press release from the City of Montreal, those responsible for Montreal’s Open Schools and Day Care Centers (CPEs) are aware of this type of incident and know the precautions to be taken in the event of a spill.

“Therefore they are in a position to take care of the children and ensure their safety during this type of situation,” the statement said.

The purpose of the inspection is to ensure that the equipment is functioning properly and to educate nearby residents on how to protect themselves.

“The safety of our citizens is a priority, and the public must be prepared to respond in the event of a release of a toxic product. This is why we act proactively, in collaboration with industry, by coordinating technical tests to raise awareness among residents in areas that may be affected,” explained Alain Viancourt, In charge of public safety at the Montreal Executive Board.
