Namita Thapar, executive director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals, discussed her experience with perimenopause in an episode of Shark Tank India.

Discussing women’s health on a public platform doesn’t happen often, and we rarely see celebrities talking about it on social media. But recently, Namita Thapar, executive director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals, discussed her experience with perimenopause in an episode of Shark Tank India. Speaking about a terrible time in her life, she revealed that she bled so much during the time that it was impossible for her to sit down for long hours.

Namita Thapar shared that she was quite lucky that she never faced any problems during her period, but it was not the same when she started perimenopause. She said people usually assume the problem is only for teenagers and younger women, but during her perimenopausal period, she faced heavy menstrual bleeding. The issues were there even as she was filming for Shark Tank. One of his colleagues on the Anupam show asked, “What is perimenopause?” Namita then went on to explain, saying that it’s a phenomenon that happens a few years “before menopause starts and your period stops completely in menopause.”

Highlighting the problems she faced and the struggle she had to face, Namita recalled, “I became so anemic that my hemoglobin went to 8 and we have an injection that we take through an IV, Ferric carboxymaltose. I had to take that injection for 5 months. It is a 45 minute process. That is how I sit here today. Such serious problems can arise with women’s productivity.” He thanked the founders of Matri, which manufactures an electronic device that offers relief from menstrual pain, for presenting their idea on such a platform as taking notice of women’s issues.

Moreover, Namita shared the video of her talking about the issue of perimenopause on her Instagram, and along with it she explained the various other symptoms that one can face. She said, “Perimenopause usually starts in your mid-40s. You experience mood swings, insomnia, hot flashes and many other symptoms. Most women are unaware of the symptoms, treatment options and it can be a very rough and disruptive time in their lives.”

Netizens were quite happy that such issues were openly discussed on social media. A user praised Namita for starting the conversation, saying, “Oh my God , you just said this on national television; Hats off to you, we need more women like you,” while another expressed gratitude and said, “Thank you Mom for speaking up, especially for learning something new.”
