The categories: cheerful, playful, bold, curious and easygoing, are said to give a sense of the character of the whiskey without letting potential customers get confused by complex label information and tasting notes.

Helen Stewart, brand marketing manager at The Single Cask, said: “We feel that this brand new way of exploring our single cask whiskeys will open the eyes of whiskey lovers to a whole new world of experiences.

“We want to be the brand that helps people find their perfect dram easily, and enjoy that unique single cask whiskey experience.

“At The Single Cask, we believe that the overall ‘charisma’ of a dram is more important than its individual flavours, and when we depict whiskeys as personalities, they become relatable.

“I could immediately relate to the vibe of the whisky.

“That ability to move and connect people, to make us feel alive in unimaginable ways and open our minds to new experiences.”

With each of the 3000 casks in Glenrothes The Single Cask warehouse already fitting into one of the mood categories, the independent bottler has also announced a brand new whiskey release to celebrate May’s whiskey month.

This includes limited edition bottles from world-renowned distilleries such as Bunnahabhain and Glen Spey as well as a special Feis Ile cask from Bruichladdich to celebrate Islay’s famous whiskey festival at the end of the month.

Ms Stewart and Kami Newton, a whiskey sensory expert, worked to develop the five-tone method to classify the style, character and personality of each whiskey in the “simplest way”.

To implement this, The Single Cask has assembled a panel of sensory whiskey assessors, the Masters of Taste, to ensure that only the best casks are selected for bottling before being designated in the appropriate mood category .

Mr Newton said: “One of the biggest challenges with taste is that it is a different experience from one person to another.

“For example, to some people, coriander tastes like a delicious, fragrant herb. But others have a genetic variation that makes coriander taste like disgusting soap.

“Add to these culturally specific flavors and the challenge of dove whiskey through flavor becomes clear.

“The five-tone approach takes a whole new approach that is less confusing and creates an emotional connection with whiskey drinkers.”

The Single Cask was founded in 2010 by Ben Curtis and built on the belief that “the search for the ultimate dram never ends”.

Bottling unique, hand-selected spirits one cask at a time, the company specializes in award-winning whiskey at natural cask strength, without any interference such as chill filtration or artificial colours.
