In the new work, scientists looked at a set of trans-Neptunian objects, or TNOs, which is the technical term for those objects that sit out at the edge of the solar system, beyond Neptune.
The new work looked at those objects whose motion has been made unstable by their interaction with Neptune’s orbit. That instability made them harder to understand, so astronomers looking at a possible Planet Nine have typically avoided using them in their analysis.
Instead, researchers looked towards those objects and tried to understand their movements. And, according to Dr Bogytin, the best explanation is that they originate from another, undiscovered planet.
The team ran a series of simulations to understand how the orbits of those objects were affected by a variety of things, including the giant planets around them such as Neptune, the “galactic tide” coming from the Path Milky, and stars passing by.
The best explanation came from the model that included Planet 9, however, Dr Bogytin said. It has been noted that there are other explanations for the behavior of those objects – including the suggestion that other planets once influenced their orbit, but have since been removed – but they claim that the Planet 9 theory is the best explanation of length
A better understanding of Planet 9’s existence or not will come when the Vera C Rubin Observatory is on, the authors note. The observatory is currently being built in Chile, and when it is switched on it will be able to scan the sky to understand the behavior of those distant objects.
Planet Nine is thought to have a mass about 10 times that of Earth and has an orbit about 20 times further from the Sun on average than Neptune. It can take between 10,000 and 20,000 Earth years to make one full orbit around the Sun.
You might be tempted to ask how an entire planet could ‘hide’ in the solar system when we have zoom capabilities like the new iPhone 15 have, but consider this: If the Earth were the size of a marble, the edge of our solar system would be 11 kilometers away. That’s a lot of space to hide a planet.
