GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court has issued a judgment focusing on the potential adverse effects of climate change and the critical role of forest protection in mitigating its effects. Citing a report published by the Reserve Bank of India named "report on currency and finances; Towards a cleaner greener India" (2022-23), the Court emphasized the alarming scenario presented in the report.

The report predicted significant economic losses and negative impacts on living standards from climate change, with estimates indicating a potential GDP loss of up to 2.8% by 2050 and 3% to 10% per year by 2100 for India. Furthermore, the report highlighted the vulnerability of sectors such as agriculture and industry to the loss of labor productivity caused by heat-related stress, predicting up to 34 million job losses in India by 2030.

Based on its recent recognition of the fundamental right to be free from the adverse effects of climate change, the court reiterated the importance of forest protection in the fight against climate change. She emphasized that a country with a surplus of forest cover can sell its carbon credits to those with a deficit.

In a separate case, the court emphasized the significance of forests for sustaining diverse life forms and regulating environmental balance. The ruling emphasized the vital role of forests in supplying oxygen, regulating carbon emissions, conserving soil and controlling pollution, thereby safeguarding the rights of marginalized communities and promoting environmental equality.
