The Super League is in talks with Sky about getting fans inside the pitch to get a better view of what video referees decide.

The Premier League now has an on-screen official at every game, but in some stadiums, supporters in attendance are left confused as to what they are looking for.

But Rugby Football League’s head of referees, Phil Bentham, admits there is talk of improving her – and changing the way she looks after being left frustrated by the result.

He said: “I was at the game and I went crazy because I wanted to see what the video ref was doing and I couldn’t see it for the block at the bottom with the scores.

“It’s been put to Sky whether or not they can change the way it looks on screen. We’re also doing some work with Sky to try and improve the footage.

“If the video referee is looking at a grounder, for example, and the image comes up on the screen, it’s a computer generated image.

“Then when Sky throw in their main HD production, the footage is a bit clearer, so we have to transfer that bit to that.

“If you’re looking to see if there are fingers on the ball or not, the clarity of the image can make all the difference.”
