A Quebec provincial police spokesman says British Columbia serial killer Robert Picton is in a medically induced coma after a prison attack and doctors planned to try to wake him soon.

Sergeant Hoggs Beaulieu says the plan to wake Picton in the next few days and see if he can survive on his own was up to date as of Wednesday, but he wasn’t sure if that had changed since then.

Police previously said Picton was in critical condition after Sunday’s attack at the maximum security Fort-Cartier institute, about 480 kilometers northeast of Quebec City.

The Correctional Service of Canada said Picton was the victim of a “major assault” and prison officers were not involved.

Pickton was convicted of six counts of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison in 2007 after being charged with the murders of 26 women.

Beaulieu previously said that a 51-year-old suspect was in custody after the attack in Picton.
