Report suggests little progress made in year 1 of Alberta emissions reduction plan Achi-News

A survey by a clean energy think tank says Alberta has done little to implement its plan to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.

The Pembina Foundation has examined the measures included in the province’s plan released a year ago.

He says he found no evidence that the government has begun the kind of public consultations needed to move Alberta’s economy toward the goal of zero-net emissions.

Despite the plan’s promise to continue reducing Alberta’s methane emissions, the organization points to the fact that the United Conservative Party government opposes federal measures aimed at that goal.

And although the plan promises to lower the emission limit for the oil dunes, the organization says it has found no indication that such a step is being considered.

The report found two examples of progress — a grant program for carbon capture and storage and more money being earmarked as a result of the government’s carbon levy towards reducing emissions.

The organization’s director, Simon Dyer, says the government’s slow movement on climate change is putting Alberta’s future at risk by putting its economy at odds with where the world is going.
