The Regina Rebels made history this weekend – taking home gold for the first time ever at the Under 18 Women’s Hockey State Championships.

The underdog Rebels defeated the Northern Storm 2-1 Saturday afternoon in the tournament final in Vernon, BC

“It was crazy,” center Ashley Brightcruz told CTV News. “It’s kind of hitting me now. But the moment it happened — it was a feeling I’ll never forget.”

The Pilot Bot’s own Berlin Lollacher was named the tournament’s top forward – while the Most Valuable Player title went to Prince Albert striker Zablocki.

Rebel’s goalkeeper, Hanna Trask, almost suffered a penalty – she blocked 26 of 27 shots on goal.

Lulacher opened the scoring midway through the second half, while Zablocki added another two minutes later.

“We came out of the gates a little lazy,” said head coach Kim Perflock. “Maybe a little nervous, but still I think our goalkeepers played very well in the first period until we were able to adjust a little. But I think in the second and third periods we played quite well.”

A late power play goal brought the storm to within one. However, Trask actually shut the door in the game’s closing minutes, making four saves.

“Their ability to adapt and adapt and play for each other is something we emphasize from day one,” Perflock added. “With a lot of talent, you can go through a lot of games in your regular season and against provincial teams but when you get to an elite level – you have to play as a team, play for each other and play for the symbol and I think they did that.”

When asked what she will remember from the experience, Breitkreutz emphasized the connections she made on the long road to the Eso Cup.

“This year we’ve been through a lot and built a close bond in everything and I think that’s the biggest thing I’ll take away [away],” she explained.

“I will never forget the moments we shared this year.”
