CHENNAI: The three convicted in the case of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination have left the country today. Murugan, Robert Pius and Jayakumar, who have been released from prison, left for Colombo, Sri Lanka this morning. After his release from jail, he was kept in a special camp in Tiruchirappalli. A team of police officers brought the trio to the Chennai International Airport early today. All three are Sri Lankan citizens who were recently granted passports by the island nation. So he has traveled to his native country.

Among the 6 criminals, Murugan and Nalini are a couple. Nalini talked to her husband at the airport for some time before he boarded the plane. He was released early on the basis of good behavior while in prison. The Supreme Court released 6 convictions in November 2022 after the Tamil Nadu government recommended the release of the convictions.

Family reunion in Britain?

Sonia Gandhi had pleaded that Nalini, one of the six accused who assassinated Rajiv Gandhi three decades ago, should not be given the death penalty as she was pregnant. Nalini’s daughter is now a doctor in Britain. Her brother Pakinathan reportedly told NDTV that Nalini is trying to get a visa to visit her daughter. If her husband Murugan also gets a British visa in Sri Lanka, everyone will be able to join together. Nalini’s brother said that our family is waiting for the meeting of parents and daughter.

Santhan, one of the six released two years ago, died in a Chennai hospital. He was being treated for liver disease. He was also a citizen of Sri Lanka. Perarivalan, an Indian citizen, was the first of the convicts to be freed. It was released in May 2022.
