A judge approved, among other things, the request of the University of Quebec and Montreal (UQAM) for a temporary restraining order against the pro-Palestinian encampment on its territory.

This comes after Supreme Court Justice Louis-Joseph Guin heard arguments from both sides at a Montreal court hearing last Friday.

In its request, UQAM did not request a complete dismantling of the encampment.

Instead, she says she wants to ensure free movement near the science complex.

In a press release, the administration stated that “the access and emergency exits to the university buildings are blocked, a number of external surveillance cameras are blocked, and the situation in and around the encampment has deteriorated in general.”

“It is becoming more and more fortified, certain materials that have accumulated there pose risks, the surfaces of certain pavilions have been vandalized, and hooded groups roam there day and night,” the school stated.

Since May 12, pro-Palestinian demonstrators have been camping near UQAM’s Pierre-Dancerou Science Complex, following similar rallies elsewhere in Canada and the United States.

The participants demand that UQAM sever its ties with Israeli institutions and reveal the extent of these ties.

They also call on the Quebec government to retract its decision to open the Quebec office in Tel Aviv.

UQAM, for its part, claims that its foundation “does not invest in weapons”, and does not have “mobility or framework agreements with Israeli universities”.

Two requests for injunctions concerning the pro-Palestinian camp set up on McGill University’s campus have been denied in recent weeks.
