President Murmu confers Bharat Ratna on BJP veteran LK Advani President Murmu confers Bharat Ratna on BJP veteran LK Advani – News18 Kannada Achi-News

New Delhi (March 31): President Draupadi Murmu visited Lal Krishna Advani’s residence on Sunday and honored him with Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu were also present on the occasion.

One of the great leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Lal Krishna Advani is credited with taking the party from obscurity to the pinnacle of power. The BJP emerged in national politics only after its Rath Yatra in the 1990s. On February 3, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government announced the Bharat Ratna award to Lal Krishna Advani.

Lal Krishna Advani served as BJP president for a long period after its formation in 1980. During a parliamentary career spanning nearly three decades, Lal Krishna Advani was the first Home Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government (1999-2004) and later is Deputy First Minister.

Born in Karachi, he came to India after partition

Born on November 8, 1927 in Karachi, British India (now Pakistan), Lal Krishna Advani came to India after Partition. Here he studied law at the Government Law College, Mumbai after graduating from DG National College, Hyderabad. After this he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and took over its activities in Rajasthan in 1947.

When Shyam Prasad Mukherjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), the political wing of the RSS, in 1951, Lal Krishna Advani became the secretary of the party’s Rajasthan unit and held the post until 1970. From 1960-1967 he was with the political magazine Jana Sangh Organiser, where he worked as an assistant editor. After 1970, he moved closer to the center of all political activities in the country and joined the Delhi unit of the party.

He became a minister for the first time in the Janata Party government

He became a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1970 and held the post until 1989. He was elected president of the BJS and held this post until 1977. After this, he became the Minister of Information and Broadcasting in the Janata Party coalition government. During his time as minister, he abolished press censorship. Repeal all anti-press laws enacted during the Emergency and institutional reforms to protect media freedom.

After the fall of the Moraji Desai government and the disintegration of the Jana Sangh, a new political party, the BJP, was formed in 1980 under the leadership of Lal Krishna Advani and Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In order to popularize the party and promote its agenda, Lal Krishna Advani started a series of Rath Yatras across India in the 1990s. In 1998, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

He became the Union Home Minister twice in the BJP-led coalition government. Lal Krishna Advani was made Deputy Prime Minister in 2002. After his party’s defeat in the 2004 general elections, he became the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He stood as his party’s prime ministerial candidate in the 2009 general elections, but the party faced defeat.

Earlier on Saturday, President Draupadi Murmu honored four great personalities of the country, former Chief Ministers PV Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, former Bihar Chief Minister Jananayak Karpuri Thakur and the country’s renowned agronomist MS Swaminathan with the Bharat Ratna. These four people were awarded this honor posthumously.
