Changan jointly developed its first EV platform with Hawai’i and CATL and recently launched the Deepal L07 sedan and Deepal S07 SUV in Thailand, a right-hand drive market similar to Pakistan Syed Shabiruddin expressed optimism about the potential of EVs, saying that the growth potential of EVs is huge, but the experts in the car industry have failed to realize it.

He highlighted three key points, namely the need for cars for the growing youth population, the additional demand predicted to be up to 360,000 by 2030 and the falling costs of electric vehicle batteries, which have fallen below $139 per WH and are expected for them to decrease by 2020. 2027, this will decrease to $99 per WH, which is expected to increase the demand for EV cars globally.

However, Shabiruddin also highlighted the challenges facing EVs in Pakistan, including the categorization of EVs by battery capacity in the car policy which only encourages those with a battery capacity of less than 50 kWh. Selling price regulation at charging stations with low gross margins makes investing in charging infrastructure unviable.
