An accused involved in gambling died in police custody in Channagiri, Karnataka. After the death of the accused in police custody, an atmosphere of tension spread in the district. Many vehicles were set on fire by the mob outside the police station. The accused was identified as Adil, who was arrested on May 24. He was accused of involvement in gambling. The police said that after he was taken into custody, his health deteriorated and he died on Friday night.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reacted to this incident. He said that the Deputy Superintendent of Police and Superintendent of Police Station Chenagiri have been suspended. He also said that this is not a case of custodial death. When the relatives of the deceased learned about this incident, they along with other local people started creating a commotion. During this period, stones were also thrown outside the police station.

The death of the accused at the police station

Daunger superintendent of police Uma Prashant said the body has been sent to the government hospital for post-mortem. After the postmortem, the body will be handed over to the relatives. According to the SP, the police are patrolling the area. Additional forces were deployed in Chanagiri. Action will be taken on the basis of the post-mortem report. The autopsy will be conducted in the presence of a judge. An officer claimed that the accused died six to seven minutes after he was brought to the police station.

In this regard, Prime Minister Siddaramaiah said that the accused suffers from epileptic seizures. He further said, “The accused had previously suffered from seizures. That is why I said it was wrong to call him to the police station. The Deputy Superintendent of Police and the Superintendent of Police were suspended because no one could be brought to the police station. Without registration of an FIR the accused should have been sent back after investigation. Siddaramaiah further said that it was a fault The police. He didn’t call it a custodial death.

A similar incident also happened in Assam

Let us tell you that a similar incident has come to light in Lakhimpur, Assam. On Wednesday, an accused arrested in a theft case in Lakhimpur died in police custody. Immediately upon receiving the information about the incident, the locals began to demonstrate. Two police officers were suspended in this case.
