NEW DELHI: The report of the study conducted by the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM) also said that the population of Hindus in India has decreased, while the population of minorities has increased. The Hindu population in India has shrunk by 7.8%. But the population of minorities including Muslims, Christians, Buddhists and Sikhs has increased. The number of Jain-Parsis has decreased. The report states that between 1950 and 2015 the population share of the majority religion (Hindus) dropped sharply by 7.8%. But a number of neighboring countries have seen their majority population jump.
The number of Hindus is decreasing, the number of Muslims is increasing
Between 1950 and 2015, the proportion of the Muslim population in India was 43.15%, Christians 5.38%, Sikhs 6.58% and Buddhists saw a slight increase. According to the EAC-PM study, the share of Hindus in the Indian population has decreased from 84% in 1950 to 78% in 2015. But Muslims have seen an increase from 9.84% to 14.09% during the same period (65 years). Excluding India, Nepal’s majority community (Hindu) saw its share of the country’s population decline by 3.6%.
Minorities are not only protected but also flourish
Released in May 2024, the report assessed trends in 167 countries around the world. A careful analysis of the data shows that minorities are not just protected, but are actually thriving in India, say the authors of the study.
Large majority of Muslims in Pakistan, Bangladesh
India’s population growth rate is completely different from neighboring countries. In neighboring countries where Muslims are the majority, the proportion of the community has seen a growth in the population. Bangladesh saw an increase of 18.5%, followed by Pakistan (3.75%) and Afghanistan (0.29%).
