Voting was held for by-elections in Pakistan on Sunday. If initial trends are to be believed, Nawaz Sharif’s ruling PML-N coalition is leading in many seats. By-elections were held for 21 national and provincial constituencies. Tight security has been imposed in some areas of Punjab and Balochistan to maintain law and order. The internet was also suspended during this period. It is worth noting that the Punjab Chief Minister had asked the federal government to withhold the data a day earlier.

Counting starts after voting ends

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, voting began at 8 am and continued until 5 pm. Major political parties including Pakistan League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supported by Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) participated in the by-election. The elections were boycotted by Maulana Fazlur Rehman of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazal. When counting began after voting had ended, private news channels began broadcasting unofficial results. Full official results were expected late Monday morning.

This party is ahead on these seats

According to Pakistani media reports, PML-N candidates are leading on two National Assembly seats in Punjab, while PPP is leading on one seat in Sindh. While the SIC candidate is leading on one seat from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP). At the same time, an independent candidate is leading from another seat in the state. PML-N is leading on one seat in Balochistan. At the same time, the Balochistan National Party candidate is leading in the second seat of the province.

Violence in Punjab, one person injured

According to the police, despite strict law and order, at least one person died and several were injured in clashes during the polling in Punjab state. Violent clashes have taken place in Narowal, Sheikhpura and Rahim Yar Khan of Punjab.
