Guwahati: A massive landslide in a remote area of ​​northern Papua New Guinea has killed more than 100 people, according to media reports. Emergency crews are now rushing to the affected area to assess the damage and carry out rescue operations.

The disaster happened in the early hours of Friday, May 24, and covered six villages in Molitka, located in Porgara-Paila district of Anga province. Local residents fear that between 80 and 100 people, including children, may be buried under the debris.

Enga district manager Sandis Tsaka confirmed that disaster response teams, along with police and health workers, had been sent to the scene. “The devastating landslide, which was described as an unprecedented natural disaster, occurred in the early hours of the morning, and caused significant damage to property and human life, which currently has no explanation,” said Tasaka.

Rescue efforts are focused on clearing the road to Porgara, which was severely damaged and blocked by a landslide. Tasaka called for support from the national government and other organizations to help the victims of the disaster.

Photos posted on social media depict residents climbing huge rocks and debris scattered among tree trunks, remnants of the catastrophic landslide. The landslide also blocked a crucial road, raising concerns about the town’s supply of fuel and goods.
