Opponents of deer culling in Longuey attended the city council meeting on Tuesday night to speak out against the plan to curb the number of animals in Michel Chartrand Park.

After years of going back and forth in the courts, a judge ruled in December that the extermination could take place. This is expected to happen in the fall with certified bow hunters. Opponents say relocation and sterilization have been proposed and killing the deer is the wrong choice.

“These animals, they live in their habitat, they have a right to be there. They value their lives and want to live. The citizens love them, they go to the park often to hang out with them, you know, and they deserve to live,” said resident Sandra Gaydos .

The municipality estimates that there are about 117 deer in the park, which should only contain about 20.
