Odisha is in the grip of intense heat for the past few days. This is the first death due to a heat wave in the country this season. Officials released that information on Friday.

An official in the office of the Special Relief Commissioner said Laxmikant Sahu (62 years) of Maheshpur in Belsur district died due to heatstroke on April 15. This is the first case of death due to the summer heat wave. Meanwhile, Public Health Director Niranjan Mishra said 71 people were admitted to various hospitals in the state after falling ill due to heat wave. Of these, 35 were from Sundergarh and seven each from Mayurbhange and Angul.

The town of Buda in western Odisha was the hottest place in the country with a temperature of 44.3 degrees Celsius. After that, a temperature of 42.2 degrees Celsius was recorded in Baripada city of north Odisha elsewhere the maximum temperature was recorded at 43 degrees Celsius or more. These include Jharsuguda (43.8°C), Angul (43.7°C), Titlagarh (43.5°C), Bolangir, Bhawani Patna, Malkangiri and Nayagarh (43°C).

Maximum temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius and above were recorded in 32 places in the country. The maximum temperature in Bhubaneswar was 41. degree Celsius, while Cuttackshahr recorded 42.6 degree Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that heatwave conditions will continue in Odisha till April 21. The maximum temperature is expected to be 40 degrees and above in most places in the next two days and three to five degrees Celsius above normal in some districts, IMD said in a bulletin. The department also said that the state can expect some relief in heat wave conditions due to the storm from Saturday.
