Halifax Regional Police have arrested and charged 21 people at a pro-Palestinian demonstration in the town of Halifax on Monday morning.

Halifax Regional Police say they responded to the area of Hollis Street and Terminal Road just after 7am

Protesters could be seen lining part of the intersection and sitting in a circle at an intersection.

More than a dozen police officers were also in the picture.

Halifax police said in a news release that officers spoke with the demonstrators in an attempt to clear the road. Police say they arrested 21 people when they refused to leave.

A press release from A15Halifax says the demonstration is part of an international economic blockade of Palestine.

Police say the 21 people who were arrested will be released later on Monday. They will also face charges of obstruction and some will have additional charges of failing to use a sidewalk and failing to obey the direction of a peace officer.

According to the statement, the area of Hollis Street and Terminal Road is now clear, but a group of 20 to 30 protesters made their way to police headquarters on Gottingen Street around 11:30am.

“We remind the public that although we respect the right to protest peacefully, enforcement action will be taken as necessary to ensure public safety,” the statement reads.
