The Punjab Food Department has said that the Punjab government has no intention of buying wheat. According to the sources, the farmers are worried about the government’s decision against buying wheat.

According to sources, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz wants to directly benefit farmers instead of benefiting middlemen. The government cannot benefit middlemen at the expense of farmers’ rights.

According to Punjab Food Department report, 2.27 million tonnes of wheat is available in Punjab. If Punjab already has a year’s supply of wheat, how can it buy more? Punjab has to repay the loan of 20 billion rupees. 355 billion rupees were taken for wheat. Every year there is a loss of Rs. More than 125 billion rupees have been spent on buying wheat. A billion rupees are spent on wheat storage and maintenance.

Sources say that by saving billions, farmers will get other facilities including Kisan Card.

The Punjab Food Department also claims that 95% of the wheat has already been sold by the farmers, and the fuss by the middlemen is unnecessary.
