Vice Admiral Tripathi was born on 15 May 1964. Dinesh Kumar Tripathi was a student of Sainik School, Rewa. He joined the Indian Navy on July 1, 1985. Vice Admiral Tripathi, a communications and electronic warfare expert, has had a career spanning nearly 40 years.

Before assuming the position of Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, he was the quartermaster general of the Western Naval Command. He also commanded INS Vinash.
