The NDP accuse the Trudeau government of taking steps to evacuate relatives of Canadians from conflict zones.

They say not a single person has been resettled from Sudan, while it is unclear if anyone has arrived from the Gaza Strip, months after they launched programs for Canadians to get their relatives out of these emergencies.

Sudan’s civil war erupted last spring, but family members say officials expect their relatives won’t arrive in Canada until the end of this year, citing delays with fingerprinting and other biometric requirements.

Canadians with family in Gaza say they were left with the impression that their loved ones would be disqualified from the program if they fled the war zone too early in the application process, only to learn later that they could still be eligible for a visa to Canada.

NDP immigration critic Jenny Cowan says the Liberals have not learned from mistakes made during the emergency resettlement of Afghans, and bureaucratic hurdles are leaving people to die in conflict zones.

Immigration Secretary Mark Miller’s office had no immediate response to the review.
