Five ‘amazing’ British museums nominated for an arts award

Museums in Skipton, Dundee, Manchester and London will compete for the 2024 Museum of the Year award.

Three of the five museums on this year’s shortlist have undergone major renovations, reopening in the last 18 months alone.

The institutions on the shortlist include museums spanning portraiture, natural history, science, textiles, fine art and children’s creativity spaces.

The winner, who will be announced on 10 July, will receive £120,000, while £15,000 will be given to each of the other four finalists.

Described as the world’s biggest museum award, the Museum of the Year shortlist was announced by Art Fund, the UK’s national charity for art.

The award recognizes projects that are open to the public from autumn 2022 to winter 2023.

Organizers say they particularly focus on community engagement, sustainable ways of working and reinvention when choosing the shortlist.

Speaking on behalf of the judges, Art Fund director Jenny Waldman described the shortlist as “shining examples of the impact that museums have locally and nationally”.

“All of our finalists have something for everyone and all have community at the heart of their programs,” he said.

“Their commitment to innovative partnerships while operating within an extremely challenging funding environment is incredible, and I am so proud to see the way they support and center young people through their work.”

The museums on the shortlist are:
