In a hospital in Mumbai, doctors performed a cesarean delivery of a woman by lighting the torch of her mobile phone, in which mother and child died. The incident took place at the Sushma Swaraj Maternity Home, which is run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the country’s richest municipal corporation. The woman’s family has been protesting outside the hospital for the past few days. Now BMC has ordered an inquiry.
The woman’s name is Sahidun (26) and her husband’s name is Khusruddin Ansari. The husband is disabled, one leg is missing. They were married for 11 months. His family has accused the hospital of not running the generator for three hours after the hospital’s lights went out on Monday. The family also said that after the death of Sahidun and the child, the doctors performed another delivery in the dark.
Family claim – Generator was not started when the lights went out
Ansari’s mother said that my daughter-in-law was perfectly healthy and all her reports during pregnancy were correct. We took her to the hospital to be born at 7 am on April 29. The doctors kept him in for the whole day. At 8 o’clock we were told that everything was fine. Doctors said the delivery would be normal. But, when I went to meet her, I saw that she was drenched in blood.
The doctors made an incision in his stomach and after that they came to take our signatures. Doctors said Sahidun had a stroke and needed a C-section. Then the lights went off, but the doctors didn’t send us to another hospital. They took us to the operating theater and performed the delivery with the help of the phone’s flashlight. The child died during birth. The doctors told us that mum would survive and asked us to go to Ysbyty Sion. But by then Sahidul had died. There wasn’t even oxygen for him.
The family claims they took us to the operating theater and delivered us with the help of the phone’s torch light.
A husband said – doctors should be punished and the hospital should be closed
The woman’s husband said the doctors should be punished. Just as I am in pain, the doctors and staff should be punished. The hospital should be closed. Ansari said I want justice. My income is very low and I am also disabled. I had a very difficult marriage and now my life is ruined.
The family also showed some pictures and videos where the second delivery was done in the same operating theater with the help of a mobile phone flashlight.
Former BJP BMC councilor Jagriti Patil said she has met Mihir Kotecha, a candidate from the North East Mumbai Lok Sabha seat. This hospital comes under this assembly seat. BMC has ordered an inquiry. Patil said the condition of the hospital is bad. Such complaints regarding the hospital were also received earlier. Strict action is needed.
