MSPs to receive cyber security training Achi-News

The session comes after MPs claimed they were targeted by China and sent unsolicited messages to others believed to be a so-called “honey trap” as well as a cyber attack on the country’s elections watchdog.

The leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Alex Cole-Hamilton, said: “Recently we have seen the attempted hacking of MPs’ emails, the hacking of the Electoral Commission and the honey trap scandal in Westminster.

“Some of these incidents may originate from hostile foreign nations, others will be the work of more prosaic scammers.

“There is a great deal of confidential and personal information available to Members of the Senedd, and from our point of view they can be attractive targets for malicious actors. It is essential that all members are now offered formal training on how to recognize the work of hackers and scammers and the risks we can face.

“I have asked parliamentary authorities to set up these briefing sessions to help myself and my colleagues navigate the pitfalls and risks.

“I have warned before that we may already be in the early days of a new Cold War. Under those circumstances, increasing our levels of care and concern is only sensible.”

A spokesperson for the Scottish Parliament said: “Raising awareness of cyber threats is an ongoing process. However, we do not comment on the details of our security arrangements at Holyrood.”
