The City of Montreal has unveiled its plans to convert the Nemours-Hippodrome area into a carbon-neutral district focused on social housing, public transportation and green.

Located in the city’s Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce district, officials say they hope “the area will stand out for its urban innovation and mobility” and leave a “minimal environmental footprint.”

The plan is to build up to 20,000 new apartments, including a potential 9,000 on the site of the former racecourse.

“A significant portion of these residential units will be designated for social and community housing that will be affordable and family-friendly,” the city states.

It is also planned to establish shops and businesses, as well as 14 dunams of green public areas, including a central park and a green belt.

Officials state that the area will be accessible and friendly to public transportation with the addition of a tram that will connect the district to the metro system.

They are also planning “civic activity centers that meet the needs of the community”, such as schools, a community center, a library, sports facilities and health facilities.

The Namur-Hippodrome neighborhood includes about 95 dunams of land near the Namur metro station.

Public consultations for the project are planned for this spring, and final adoption is expected this fall.

Without complications, construction could begin as early as 2025.
