The City of Montreal is scheduled to conduct its annual warning siren inspection on Wednesday.

The test will take place between 9:00 and 15:00

“This simulation will raise awareness among the residents of the area on how to maintain safety in the event of an incident involving the release of a toxic substance,” reads a press release from the municipality.

Ten industrial plants take part in the alarm.

“The safety of all citizens is a top priority, and residents must be prepared to respond in the event of a toxic release,” said Alain Vaincourt, executive committee member responsible for public safety. “This is why we are taking proactive action, together with the industrial plants to coordinate technical tests in areas that may be affected.”

As part of this simulation, the factories will activate the alarm in turn, according to a predetermined schedule, which lasts three minutes.

In the event of an actual incident, the siren will display safety instructions.

To stay safe and allow first responders to do their job effectively, follow these guidelines:

  • Enter the nearest building as quickly as possible.
  • Close all doors, windows and ventilation systems.
  • Avoid going to pick up your children from school in order to avoid any danger to yourself or your children.
  • Keep phone lines free.
  • Follow the instructions given by the authorities.

Schools and daycare administrators throughout the potentially exposed areas have been informed of the safety instructions to follow in the event of a toxic release.

The test is a requirement under the Canadian government’s environmental emergency regulations.
