Montreal community mourns black civil rights activist Dan Phillip Achi-News

Montrealers began paying their respects over the weekend for Dan Phillip, a leader in Montreal’s black community, who died on April 1 at the age of 87.

Philip was instrumental in the fight against racism and discrimination in the city and was an early activist fighting against police abuse.

He was instrumental in changing policy and behavior towards the black community and set the stage for the fight against racial profiling.

He also fought against widespread racial discrimination in housing and the taxi industry in the 1980s and 1990s.

His funeral will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Holiday Family Church on Lajeunesse Street in Villeray.
