GUWAHATI: Mohan Majhi, a four-time MLA from Keonjhar, has been appointed as the new Chief Minister of Odisha. This announcement follows the BJP’s victory in the last state election, where they secured 78 out of 147 seats, enabling them to form the government independently for the first time in the state’s history.

Along with Majhi, the BJP also selected two deputy chief ministers: KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida. The decision was taken after a crucial meeting of the BJP Legislature Party in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday, June 11.

Majhi’s political journey began at the grassroots level as a Sarpan from 1997 to 2000. He first entered the Odisha Legislative Assembly representing Kunjhar in 2000 and was re-elected in 2004.

After a brief hiatus, he returned to the assembly in 2019. In the last election, Majhi retained his seat by defeating Meena Majhi of the BJD by a margin of 11,577 votes.

As the opposition chief whip in the previous assembly, Majhi was known for his scathing criticism of the BJD government on several key issues. The 53-year-old tribal leader is scheduled to be sworn in as chief minister on Wednesday, replacing Naveen Patnaik, the veteran BJD chief who dominated Odisha’s political landscape for more than two decades.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with senior BJP leaders and chief ministers from various states, are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony at Janta Maidan in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.
