The Ministry of External Affairs directed the passport authorities to issue cancellation orders to people from Goa as well as Daman and Diu whose Indian passports were canceled after obtaining Portuguese citizenship. The decision will provide relief to those who have become ineligible to apply for Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) due to previous passport requirements.

In a statement issued on April 4, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Ministry of Interior decided to accept the cancellation certificate as an alternative document instead of the surrender certificate in the case of Indian citizens who had previously arrived in India. Portuguese territories. The surrender certificate requirement created challenges for people who wanted to apply for an OCI card. Following a November 30, 2022 memorandum from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the passports of Guyanese who acquired Portuguese citizenship to suppress material information about their foreign citizenship were revoked.

The External Affairs Ministry’s decision was welcomed by Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. He appreciated the announcement and thanked Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for submitting his government’s request and providing assistance to the citizens of Goa.
