“It has come to our notice that the police in Anantnag, Shopian, and Kulgam have started a campaign of terror against our Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) polling agents. As of this evening, a number of polling agents have either been forceful. taken from their residences or called to police stations, where they are kept in illegal captivity,” the party’s letter said.
In a number of places, especially in the Anantnag area, the workers are “threatened and harassed” in order to prevent them from casting their votes, he claims.
“This systematic targeting of PDP polling agents suggests a deliberate attempt by the state administration, acting at the behest of candidates contesting as proxies for the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) to undermine the democratic process and ensure our defeat ,” the PDP claimed.
The PDP appealed to the commission to direct the state police to release all detained PDP polling agents without delay and ensure that no further “obstacles” are created by the state administration that could affect the manner that free and fair elections are held.
