The Lok Sabha elections are taking place in Manipur, which suffers from caste violence. Manipur has two Lok Sabha seats, one of which will go to polls tomorrow. Regarding the preparations for the vote, the official said that tight security arrangements were made for the first phase. All arrangements are in place.

It is worth noting that 60 assembly constituencies are in the two parliamentary constituencies of Interior Manipur. In the first phase, voting will be held on 32 seats of Inner Manipur and 15 seats of Outer Manipur on Friday. The remaining 13 assembly seats fall under the second Lok Sabha constituency, where voting will be held on April 26.

Voting will start at 7 am, 70 sensitive polling stations

The main contest for the Manipur Interior seat is between BJP’s state education minister Thaunaojam Basant Kumar Singh and Angomcha Bimol Akoijam of the Congress. However, a total of six candidates contested the elections here. District Election Officer T. Kirankumar said that voting will begin at 7 am and will continue till 4 pm. A total of 9.91 lakh voters will exercise their franchise in Inner Manipur. He said polling would be held in 1,319 polling stations in Manipur interior, apart from 29 special polling stations created for people displaced by the conflict. 70 polling stations in Imphal West district have been identified as sensitive. As a precaution, adequate security arrangements were made there, including the deployment of central armed police forces.

This is the reason for the violence in Manipur

The number of people of the Mayiti community in the country is about 60 percent. This community sits in the Imphal Valley and its surroundings. The community said they are facing problems in the country due to illegal infiltrators from Myanmar and Bangladesh.

At the same time, according to the current law, they are not allowed to settle in the hilly areas of the country. This is why the Mitti community petitioned the High Court to include them in the tribal category. The petitioner told the court that the Mitti community was recognized as a tribe before the merger of the princely state of Manipur with the Union of India in 1949. On April 19, the High Court gave its verdict on this petition. It was said that the government should consider including the Mitei community in the tribal category. Also, the High Court gave four weeks time to the state government for this. Now violence is happening in Manipur in protest against this decision.
