Manchester United fans have joked that Thomas Tuchel has “passed his audition” after a “disastrous performance” against Real Madrid.

The German coach, 50 years old, announced that he is leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

As the pressure continues to mount on Erik ten Haag after a difficult campaign at Old Trafford, Tuchel has found himself linked with a job at United.

Despite missing out on the Bundesliga title for the first time in 11 years, the former Chelsea manager hoped to bow out of Bayern and lead them to Champions League glory.

However, that dream went up in smoke tonight as he and his side suffered heartbreak in the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid grabbed a stunning victory at the death to seal their place at Wembley.

Bayern looked set to go through after Alphonso Davies’ rocket put them ahead with just 22 minutes to go.

They seemed comfortable going full-time and keeping Madrid at bay until disaster struck.

Real substitute Juslo grabbed an equalizing goal in the 88th minute after being caught by a mistake by Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Then seconds later the ex-Stoke City flop and Newcastle finished from six yards to beat it 2-1.

The 34-year-old Spaniard’s introduction proved to be a winner – but it wasn’t the only substitution that proved to be a major talking point.

First, Tuchel brought on Kim Min-jae for Leroy Sane in the 76th minute despite the South Korean’s nightmare in the first leg last week, switching to a back three.

But it was the decision to replace 44-goal top scorer Kane, who is still waiting for his first piece of silverware, for Eric Maxim Chopo-Moting on 86 minutes that left everyone bewildered.

Former Real Madrid star Steve McManaman told TNT Sports: “The best number nine around is off the pitch.”

Winger Jamal Musiale was also replaced by Thomas Müller at the same time – and those decisions backfired completely.

Speaking on TNT Sport, ex-Bayern and Man United, Owen Hargreaves, said: “I’ll tell you what was unexpected, Harry Kane coming off the pitch.

“This is one of the biggest players I’ve seen in a football game of this magnitude.

“Get off a guy who has scored 44 goals, who is the most durable player anywhere, and you bring in another striker in Chopo-Moting. Maybe he wanted height for the corners, I don’t know.

“You can’t take him down. There are five minutes left in the game, there are ten minutes of extra time, 15 minutes. I told Shulis straight away, they are going to score.

“This is one of the biggest calls. I love Thomas Tuchel. I don’t know why they called. Kim arrived ten minutes before and they were quite comfortable.

“They went from a back four to a back three. Bayern had it in their hands and they let it go. Neuer’s mistake is clear, but everyone will talk about the substitutes, you can’t take Harry Kane off.”

The United Schools legend then added: “It’s over with a game of substitutions. Good for Real Madrid. Joselo with the two goals, brilliant. Wins his team the game. Neuer makes a huge mistake that he will be disappointed with.

“I thought Tuchel’s substitutions were strange. Kane was strange. Even if they score one goal, there’s still extra time, penalties to come too, you know how strong he is.

“Kim was the outsider. I thought they looked pretty comfortable in the game up to that point. They’re going three at the back. Kim going down last week was a disaster for him and again he looks a bit all over the place.”

And with the latest speculation linking him with Old Trafford, it didn’t take long for fans to start sticking the boot online.

One joked: “Thomas Tuchel makes his best Manchester United 23/24 impression by conceding 2 in quick succession.

“This guy passed the audition.”

Along with a laughing emoji, another post read: “Manchester United fans watch this Tuchel disaster lesson and there you go.”

A third commented: “Tochel completely threw this game away with his poor substitutes.

“It’s quite typical for Yotad fans to get gassy at the moment and lose the plot. He’s far from what this club needs to move forward.”

While a fourth added: “Tochel taking down Kane and Musiale only to lose his lead within minutes is so absurd that he can only come to Man Utd this summer.”

The verdict of the judges regarding the future of Tan Hag

Where do the commentators stand regarding Eric Ten Haag’s future at Manchester United?

Michael Owen – He has to go

“He cannot, simply cannot, manage this team next season. He is not good enough.”

Teddy Sheringham – can stay if he wins the cup but has to go

“If United win the FA Cup, he can stay. But, as far as I’m concerned, changes are needed and United need to make it sooner rather than later.”

Jamie Carragher – Fired

“I don’t see how Eric Ten Haag stays. It’s just performance after performance.”

Gary Neville – Stay if he wins the FA Cup

“To fire a manager who won two cups in his first two seasons at the club, I think it would be extreme.”

Louis Saa – on the fence

“I don’t see it clearly but they need changes from the players but they also need changes from him.”

Alan Shearer – fired

“I believe that the future of the Man Utd manager has already been determined. Even if they win the FA Cup, I think he is gone.”
