A high-level minister has made a special request to the Indians after Maldives tourism was hit hard by the decision of the Maldives government, which had opposed India. Maldives Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal appealed to Indian tourists to support the tourism-dependent economy of the Maldives. As the number of Indian tourists visiting the Maldives dwindles, the island nation’s tourism minister on Monday urged Indians to contribute to the country’s economy (Maldives India Relations).
This statement by the Maldives Tourism Minister has come out after the Maldives government, Mohammed Muizhu, complained about the deterioration of relations with India.
A warm welcome to the arrival of the Indians
“We have an ancient history. Our newly elected government also wants to collaborate with India. We always promote peace and a friendly environment. Our people and our government extend a warm welcome to the arrival of Indians. As tourism minister, I would like to tell Indians to be a part of tourism in Maldives. Our economy depends on tourism,” Maldivian Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal told PTI in an interview.
Celebrity travel cancellations
There was a huge backlash from India after Maldivian ministers and officials made derogatory statements about India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media, after which many Indians, including many Indian celebrities, canceled their trips to the Maldives .
A huge drop in the number of tourists
According to a sun.mv report published on Monday, the number of tourist arrivals from India to the Maldives has decreased by 42 percent in the first four months of this year compared to the first four months of last year. India was the Maldives’ top tourism market earlier this year. Within a few days of the year, India fell to sixth place among the top tourism markets, the report said.
According to tourism ministry data, Maldives recorded a total of 43,991 tourist arrivals from India till May 4. Between January and April last year, the Maldives recorded 73,785 tourist arrivals. This year, the number is 42,638. The report attributed the sharp decline in Indian tourists to the deterioration in relations between India and the Maldives after the new administration led by President Mohamed Muizu came to power in November last year.
