Mahatma Gandhi’s granddaughter Ela Gandhi has said that hatred, enmity and violence are not part of any religious teachings, after the Phoenix Settlement Trust alleged that Hindu prayers were deliberately omitted at an inter-faith meeting organized at the Phoenix Settlement . Responding to social media posts, he said that all our beliefs and scriptures guide us to be good, kind and loving human beings. Hatred, hostility and violence are not part of our essential religious teachings. Such actions were an attempt to create a rift between the Hindu and Muslim communities and to isolate Gandhiji and myself from the Hindu community.

Through an open letter in the weekly mail, Ila said that the facts need to be stated publicly so that the mischief that is being attempted now can be stopped. To clarify, I had invited many Hindus individually and many Hindu faith leaders collectively to offer Hindu prayers at this event, Ila said, noting invitations to four Hindu institutions.

He said that the special thing is that no one, until now, in the 120 years of the Phoenix Colony’s existence, has accused us of intentionally leaving a sect, as is happening in current times.
