Luke Charters, Labour’s choice for York Outer, addressed a rally at New Earswick Bowls Club in Huntington Road today (Saturday, May 25).

The incident happened a few hundred meters from the Huntington school, where Mr Charters attended, and he said his son was named after an inspirational educator who still teaches there.

Luke Charters said: “I am proud to stand as the Labor Parliamentary candidate for York Outer.

“As a local father, I am running to be your Member of Parliament.

“I grew up in York, having lived across the constituency in Haxby, Sternsel and Oswaldwick.

“People talk about a digital campaign and flyers, but it’s the personal touch that also shows its effectiveness.

“I want to be out knocking on doors all the time.”

The campaign event was attended by David Skeeth, recently elected Mayor of York and North Yorkshire in the new combined authority, Rachel Maskell, MP for York Central and Claire Douglas, Leader of York City Council.

Luke Charters said: “I studied at The Huntington School, which gave me the confidence to apply and go to Oxford University, and have a career at the Bank of England.

“Indeed, education was one of the great achievements of the last Labor government, my education and achievements testify to that.

“I am proud that last week Keir Starmer unveiled his plan to bring 6,500 new teachers into schools.

“The last Labor government changed education.

“We did it once, we’ll do it again – with your help.”

“This calendar year our amazing Labor volunteers have spoken to 8,000 York Outer residents and we look forward to speaking to thousands more over the next fortnight.”

David Scaite said: “Luke has family here and he really wants to make the change for York Outer that we so badly need.

“People don’t want to see fancy social media, they want to see people on their doorstep, talking to them, so they can connect with that person.”

The York Outer constituency is held by Conservative MP Julian Sturdy.

Additional candidates who are designated for the seat in the general elections that will be held on July 4 are:

Andrew Hollier – Liberal Democrat

Michael Kearney – Green Party
