The City of Longueuil announced Wednesday that it is establishing a Sexual Assault Investigation Review Committee (REMAS) to review unsolved cases by the Longueuil Police Department (SPAL).

The process is done in collaboration with the Longueuil Police, the Office of the Crown Prosecutor (DPCP) and the Victims of Crime Assistance Centers (CAVAC).

“The purpose of this partnership, with experts from various fields, is to identify best practices in handling sexual assault cases and increase victims’ trust in the justice system,” said city officials. “Among other things, the participants will be asked to examine the police investigation, the follow-up and the support given to the victims. Also, the participants will be careful to handle the cases in accordance with the law and with respect for the victims’ rights.”

Cases pending review are those where no charges have been filed.

Victims must request a review by e-mailing [email protected]
