The minimum voting age for citizens of India is known, 18. According to the rules, only those who turn 18 by April 1, 2024 can vote in the Lok Sabha elections this time. Accordingly, 1 crore 84 lakh voters aged around 18 have registered their names this time. Around 84 crore people will vote in this Lok Sabha election across the country.

There was a time in the country when the minimum voting age was 21 years. In 1989, the minimum voting age was lowered from three years to 18 years. Currently, Indian citizens get the right to vote at the age of 18. The first proposal to lower the voting age was tabled in the Lok Sabha on 13 December 1988. The then Water Resources Development Minister B Sankarananda proposed this. The approval of all state and union territory assemblies across the country was required to pass this proposal. All but five of the States and Union Territories Assemblies agreed to it, namely Nagaland, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.

It was decided on 28 March 1989 to lower the minimum voting age across the country. This rule came into force in 1989 after the 61st amendment to the Constitution of India. After the implementation of this rule, the number of voters increased by 5 crores in one stroke.
