History of Amethi Lok Sabha Constituency

Amethi Lok Sabha constituency was formed in 1967 after the devolution of parliamentary constituencies. This parliamentary constituency includes Tiloy, Salon, Jagdishpur, Gauriganj and Amethi assembly constituencies. Vidyadhar Bajpai of the Congress was the MP from this constituency for 10 years between 1967 and 1977. Later this field came into the hands of the Gandhi family.

Sanjay Gandhi was the first candidate of the Nehru family

In 1977, Sanjay Gandhi, the youngest son of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, made his electoral debut from Amethi. Sanjay Gandhi lost his first election to Rabindra Pratap Singh of the Janata Party as anti-Congress sentiment ran high in the country during the Emergency. The people of Amethi voted for a non-Congress candidate for the first time.
