The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) expects river flows in local waterways to be higher than normal this time of year.

The GRCA says a weather system is expected to move through the Grand River watershed from Tuesday to Wednesday, bringing above freezing temperatures and about 40 to 50mm of rain.

Although significant flooding is not expected, there is an increased risk in low-lying areas that are usually prone to flooding.

“The GRCA reservoirs are at their normal level of activity for this time of year and will be activated to manage runoff and reduce flooding downstream. River flows will remain high, increasing the safety risk around rivers and streams along the watershed,” the GRCA said in a statement.

The public is urged to take “extreme caution” around local waterways.

“The banks near the rivers and streams are very slippery, and in combination with cold, fast-flowing water, pose a serious danger. Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from all watercourses.”

The flood advisory will remain in effect until noon Friday.

More information about the flood warning system is available on the GRCA website.
