Liam Sutcliffe admits Hull FC can’t feel sorry for themselves despite feeling guilty or there could be another blow to come.

The Black and Whites face Leeds in their first home game since boss Tony Smith was sacked following a poor run of results.

Interim Simon Grix was hammered 58-0 at St Helens in his first game in charge but Sutcliffe knows sympathy will be thin at the ground.

Although the security is low, there is only one way the other side from below can get out of this.

He said: “It’s been tough. With Tony going, it’s been a hectic couple of weeks – we’ve had to deal with all that as well as the disappointing start to the season.

“There is guilt there because we as players did not put on performances but the season also continues and we really need to continue.

“It was disappointing for Tony and how we played for him but you have to forget about that pretty quickly. The season won’t stop for a change of coach.

“The sequence of results was knocking confidence. The manner of performances and the scoring lines emphasizes that confidence is low, we didn’t play well.

“There were a few games where we had efforts and parts, but other than that, it was disappointing. We just have to try to get on with it and keep working.”

Center Sutcliffe, 29, will be up against some familiar faces when he takes on the side where he transitioned and established himself as a Premier League star.

But even if FC turns it around today, the next coffee meeting with friend Ash Handley will be no different.

He added: “I’m very close to Ash and we meet for coffee regularly. I did this last week to catch up.

“There are little bits of rugby that are talked about, but most of it is to stay away from that side of things.

“I’m sure if we were talking about rugby, we’d end up talking about the state of both sides. You’d think Hull FC and Leeds should be higher up the table, especially us.

“We wanted to give it a real crack this year, so our position is very disappointing. But beating Leeds would be nice and something we can build from.”
