LAHORE: Three separate petitions filed in Lahore High Court (LHC), Islamabad High Court (IHC) and Sukkur Bench of Sindh High Court (SHC) seeking withdrawal of notice issued by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA ) restricts the television channels from broadcasting tickers and court case headlines.
In the petitions filed by the representative organizations of Supreme Court and High Court Correspondents in the Islamabad High Court, it was said that the PEMRA notification is in violation of Article 19 and 19A, and the notification should be declared unconstitutional and quashed.
The petition was filed by the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) in the Sukkur Bench of the Sindh High Court. According to the petitioner’s counsel, PEMRA, the Federal Government and the Information Secretary have been made parties to the petition.
PEMRA guidelines on reporting pending court cases state that tickers and headlines related to court cases should be avoided.
The petitioner said that PEMRA’s notification regarding the judicial proceedings was illegal.
