The Association of McGill Professors of Law (AMPL) launched an indefinite strike on Wednesday in response to what it calls McGill University’s refusal to “engage in genuine negotiations.”

On April 11, the association announced that more than three quarters of its members voted in favor of an indefinite strike if a tentative agreement is not reached by April 23.

“Since then, following what she has been doing for the past three years, McGill has not even attempted to negotiate a fair agreement,” the AMPL said in a press release issued Tuesday. “She did not agree to bargaining meetings of adequate duration or frequency. She did not negotiate in good faith.”

The association represents full professors in the law faculty at the university and demands, among other things, “protection against arbitrary decisions affecting their careers”, salary increases and a say in the management of the faculty.

“McGill’s refusal to negotiate standard clauses common to all other universities has led to this strike,” said Richard Janda, AMPL’s chief negotiator, in a press release.

He adds, “Instead of working with faculty to prevent hardship for students, the administration is doing everything it can to inflict hardship on students. It has indicated that its goal is to eliminate the AMPL, in direct violation of Quebec law.”
