Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attended the Khalsa Day event in Toronto on Sunday. Apart from this, leaders of the opposition New Democratic Party Pierre Poilever and Jagmeet Singh were also present at the event. It was during Justin Trudeau’s speech that slogans were raised demanding an independent and sovereign Khalistani state. India expressed its displeasure by summoning Canada’s Deputy High Commissioner. Not only that, the Ministry of External Affairs released a statement saying, ‘This incident will have a negative impact on India-Canada bilateral relations’.

Tensions in India-Canada bilateral relations are not new here, almost seven months ago the Prime Minister of Canada targeted India for the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar while standing in the Canadian Parliament. There was a lot of confusion about the relationship between the two countries. The tension in the relationship is reflected in the issue of visas. India also imposed restrictions on issuing visas to Canadian citizens. Later, however, both countries took steps to normalize relations.
