Mr Swinney had promised Ms Forbes a “significant” role last week.
She was seen as the only real potential challenger to him during the SNP leadership contest but eventually endorsed the North Perthshire MSP to clear his path to Bute House.

The Scottish Government said that Ms Forbes will “support the First Minister to ensure that the Scottish Government focuses on supporting economic growth, investing in public services and eradicating child poverty.”
The First Minister said: “I am delighted to appoint Kate as Deputy First Minister and I look forward to working with her in this new government.
“She is an extremely talented politician, and her new role will be vital as we focus on our key commitments of eradicating child poverty, investing in public services and supporting economic growth.”
Ms Forbes said: “I am very honored to accept John’s invitation to be his Deputy First Minister.
“This is a moment of extraordinary privilege for me. Having previously served in the Cabinet, I know the duty each Minister has to reflect the government’s priorities and the missions that guide them.
“I look forward to working with John and colleagues in the Cabinet, delivering for the people of Scotland and building a better country.”

In a letter to Ms Robison, the Prime Minister said he appreciated her “willingness to help the process of moving our party and our government forward by offering to step aside from the role of Deputy Prime Minister.”
He added: “I thought hard about your proposal because I recognize it as an act of selfless generosity. I agree with you that it will help me create the inclusive and united team needed to move the Scotland ahead.”
