The Karnataka government has included the entire Muslim community in the state as a backward class to provide the benefits of reservation. However, this move by the government is being criticized. The National Commission for Backward Classes also opposed the decision of the Karnataka government and said that this decision of the government will weaken the principles of social justice.

Karnataka Government’s decision to provide benefits by invitation to the Muslim community

According to the data provided by the Backward Classes Welfare Department of Karnataka, all the castes of the Muslim community in the state were considered educationally and socially backward and were listed in the IIB category of backward classes of the state. Last year, the National Backward Classes Commission (NCBC) reviewed the state’s reservation policy for the OBC category. Now on Monday night, NCBC issued a statement saying that all the castes and communities of the Muslim community in the country have been considered socially and educationally backward and they have been listed under category IIB in the list of backward classes of the country. In doing so, they will have reservations in admission to educational institutions and recruitment in the state services.

A backward committee expressed displeasure with the government’s decision

NCBC opposed the state government’s decision, saying that the decision to include the entire Muslim community in the Other Backward Classes would weaken the principles of social justice. NCBC recognized that there are historically marginalized sections of the Muslim community, but it is wrong to refer to the entire community as backward. Expressing concern over the government’s decision, NCBC said it would also have a negative impact on reservation in local body elections. In Karnataka, 32 percent reservation is given to Other Backward Classes in local body elections. There is a requirement to divide this reservation between different communities. The Muslim population in the country is about 12.92 percent.
